Challan no 280 is a form that can be utilised by anyone to make an Income Tax payment. This tax can be based on self-assessment, distributed income and profit, regular assessment, or advance tax.

Officially, Challan 280 form is referred to as ITNS 280 form. Many refer to Challan 280 as TDS Challan 280 as well.

Be it for online or offline payment, this single form can be used for various purposes. If you use the offline route, you will need to acquire the Challan 280 form from a designated bank branch and then do the payment. You can also download and fill out the form, and then make the payment.

How to Pay Income Tax Online with Challan 280?

  • Visit the official website of Income Tax at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
  • On the homepage, locate the 'Quick Links' section on the left side.
  • Click on the 'e-Pay Tax' option or use the search bar to find 'e-Pay Tax'.
  • Enter PAN and re-enter to confirm it. Provide mobile number and click 'Continue'
  • Enter the 6-digit OTP received on mobile number and click 'Continue'.
  • Select the correct Assessment Year and Payment Type.
  • Under the ‘Type of Payment’, select ‘Self-Assessment Tax (300)’ and click on 'Continue'.
  • Enter the payment amounts accurately under the relevant categories.
  • Select the payment method and bank to make the tax payment and press 'Continue'.
  • Payment can be made using internet banking, debit card, credit card, RTGS/NEFT, UPI or can choose to pay at the bank counter.
  • After clicking 'Continue', preview the challan details.
  • Double-check the payment information for accuracy.
  • Click 'Pay Now' to make the payment or 'Edit' to modify the details.
  • Tick the checkbox to agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Click 'Submit To Bank' to proceed with the payment.
  • A confirmation will be received once the tax payment has been successfully submitted.

Download Challan 280 (Offline)

If you are wondering how to download Income Tax paid challan, you need to know that Challan 280 can be downloaded from the web and used for offline tax payments too.

  • Visit the official website of Income Tax India at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
  • Click on the 'forms/downloads' option from the top menu on the home page.
  • Click on the 'challans' option under the forms/downloads menu, which will take you to a webpage with a list of all the challans that can be downloaded. From this large list, spot 'ITNS-280' and click on it.
  • Challan 280, like other challans, is available in two different formats: PDF and fillable form. Depending on your preference, choose the option.

Proof of Payment of Tax

After doing a successful payment transaction via the Challan 280 route, a challan counterfoil with many details will be shown. This is an important document for proof of payment of tax. The details displayed will have CIN, payment details, and bank name for processing the e-payment. This document i.e. counterfoil is proof that the transaction was completed.

Verification of Challan Tax Payment

You have to login to the e-filing website of Income Tax with your credentials. Once in, click on My Account and the details would be accurately displayed based on successful payment. Note that the mode of payment is also displayed properly.

When to pay Advance Tax

If your annual tax dues are Rs 10,000 and above, you can pay the advance tax.

Advance tax can be paid by the following entities/people:
  • If you are a freelancer, consultant, or contractor, then you may be required to pay advance tax.
  • In case you run a business of your own, then you may be required to pay advance tax.
  • If you are a salaried employee, then it is the job of your employer to take care of the payment of advance tax via TDS deductions.
  • Also, do note that if you are a salaried staff but have a higher income from capital or interest gains or rental income, then, too, you may have to pay advance tax.

How to compute and pay Advance Tax

Computing advance tax is somewhat similar to calculating your annual tax payments. To do so:
  • Understand what your annual income from your salary is.
  • Add all the capital and interest gains to that
  • This figure will form the basis of your advance tax calculation.

In case you are a freelancer or consultant, provide the estimate of the income you earn annually and deduct the expenses incurred. Do remember, you can provide the details of the rent you pay, internet bills, mobile bills, travel expenses, etc. under total expenses.
