The fight against COVID-19 has witnessed a boost with the roll-out of vaccines. It is advised to get vaccinated as soon as possible, keeping in mind government protocols and guidelines.
However, people are still apprehensive and have questions regarding the vaccine. We answer a few FAQs.
Do I need to get vaccinated if I had been infected with the coronavirus in the past?
The Health Ministry advises you to take the vaccine irrespective of whether you had been infected with the corona virus in the past. Development of immunity or the time of being protected against the COVID-19 virus after infection is not yet established. Hence, you must get vaccinated. It is advisable to wait for 4-8 weeks after infection for the symptoms to subside before you take the coronavirus vaccine.
When would I be considered fully vaccinated?
You would be considered fully vaccinated only two weeks after taking the second dose, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

What precautions must I take after getting vaccinated?
According to the Health Ministry, you must continue to follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour even after getting vaccinated. This includes social distancing, wearing a mask and frequent sanitisation.
What can I do after getting vaccinated?
According to CDC, a vaccinated person can do the following.
- Be inside a home or a private setting without a mask with fully vaccinated people
It also advises people against.:
- Being inside a home or private setting with people at risk of severe illness from the COVID-19 virus
- Attending gatherings
Even after you have been fully vaccinated, you must be on the lookout for symptoms of COVID-19, especially if you have been in contact with someone with the virus. If you are exhibiting symptoms, get tested, isolate yourself and consult a doctor.
What precautions do I need to take at my workplace?
Your workplace may have a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Hence, it is advisable to continue taking COVID-19-specific safety precautions. Also, you should adhere to the guidelines laid down by your organisation at all times.
How long will I be protected from the virus after taking the vaccine?
The time for which you will have immunity against the virus after vaccination is yet to be determined. Hence the Health Ministry advises on using masks, physical distancing, sanitising and following COVID-19 safety protocols even after getting vaccinated.
Does the vaccine offer protection against new strains of the virus?
The Health Ministry states that all the vaccines are expected to provide at least some level of protection against the mutated virus as well. The vaccines cause a broad immune response involving multiple antibodies and cells. Based on the data on mutations, it is not likely that the vaccine would be ineffective.
As the research on the effectiveness of the vaccine against mutations continues, WHO advises people to take precautions. This includes keeping a distance of one metre from others, sneezing or coughing into your elbow, cleaning your hands regularly, wearing a mask and ensuring proper ventilation in closed rooms.
As the study on the virus and the effect of vaccines continues, fresh developments will continue to come out. The CDC, WHO, and Health Ministry guidelines are being continually updated in line with the findings. You must keep an eye out for any updates. Refer to the official sites of these organisations for any queries and do not fall for unverified information.
