The second wave of coronavirus has hit India hard. The virus has reportedly mutated and is now more dangerous. Also, the case count is increasing every day and the health care system is struggling to keep up. In such a scenario, it is more important than ever to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
Health Authorities have suggested precautions that you must take in the face of the second wave of COVID-19.
Avoid meeting people physically and inviting guests into your house
As per various advisories by the MoHFW (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare), the virus now spreads more easily. Since many people infected by Covid-19 are asymptomatic, it is hard to detect a coronavirus infection without proper testing. Hence, you must avoid meeting people physically or inviting them to your house. Also, stay away from crowded places, as they can be super-spreaders.
Do not travel
Your travel plans may have been shelved because of the lockdown last year. This can be a motivation to head out and travel. However, travelling during the second wave is a high-risk activity. The chances of getting infected by coronavirus are higher compared to before. Hence, it is advisable to cancel or postpone your travel plans for the time being.
Health protocols to follow every time you step out
A face mask offers the best protection there is when you are outside. Considering the mutation of the virus, the CDC has updated the mask guidelines.
It is recommended to wear double masks. An effective technique is using a disposable mask under a cloth mask. Also, ensure that your mask sits snugly on your face. Choose a mask with wire as it fits on your face better.
As suggested by health authorities to maintain at least 1-meter distance from others whenever you step out. Wash hands with soap and water & use 60% alcohol base hand sanitizer often. Stay hydrated and get rest.
Be prepared
If the last year has taught us anything, it is to be prepared. You must have tools like a pulse oximeter, a thermometer, gloves and other PPEs at hand. Also, make a list of emergency contacts including the official COVID-19 helpline, contacts of authorities and COVID-19 war rooms of your city. It is also advisable to have basic medicines like paracetamol handy. However, ensure that you do not self-medicate or hoard medicines.
Be on the lookout for symptoms
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), WHO (World Health Organisation) and The MoHFW are constantly updating the symptoms caused by the virus. Reportedly, certain additional symptoms are occurring in the second wave. Keep yourself updated and go for a test if you show any of these symptoms. It is also necessary for you to self-isolate if the result is positive. If you cannot isolate yourself at home, you can contact the authorities who can arrange for your stay in a dedicated COVID-19 care centre.
Apart from this, you can also consider taking the Covid-19 vaccine and securing yourself against the virus. Also, be updated about the latest guidelines that come out from time to time. In case you are infected, avoid panic, reach out to the concerned authorities, keep in touch with your doctor and take the necessary measures as listed on the official websites of health care organisations.
